(NC)-Hearing loss is a significant issue in the lives of many Canadians, but one study suggests that stigmas about hearing aids still persist. In a recent survey conducted by The Canadian Hearing Society, nearly one in four respondents reported personally experiencing some hearing loss. But one in six people polled responded that they would rather live with some hearing loss than wear a hearing aid-a number that jumps to one in five among those who actually report experiencing hearing loss. "People who suspect they suffer from hearing loss often do not want to admit it," says Gael Hannan, a 48-year-old advocate for The Canadian Hearing Society who has lived with hearing loss since age three. "For many, hearing loss is a sign of aging.
People often don't want to acknowledge that they can't understand conversations for fear it will make them seem old or weak."However, there is little question that hearing aids can improve many people's quality of life. "The day I got my hearing aid was a day I'll never forget," says Hannan. "I received my first aid at age 20. My world exploded into sound and the streetcar with its clanging and screeching sent me through the roof. Getting a hearing aid changed my life.
It has connected me to the world in a wonderful way."Gael Hannan's successes as an award-winning community theatre actress, playwright and mother demonstrate that individuals with hearing loss lead full and active lives. Clearly, negative stereotypes about hearing aids are misinformed and outdated. Canadians living with hearing loss and deafness have a place they can turn to: The Canadian Hearing Society. It provides services and support to hard of hearing and deaf people and has recently launched a public awareness campaign to dispel the myths and stigmas associated with deafness and hearing loss.Information provided by The Canadian Hearing Society. Hearing Loss is the Number One Disability in the World
Hearing loss is prevalent in modern societies as a result of the combined effects of noise, aging, disease, and heredity.
Hearing loss is the number one disability in the world; approximately 28 million Americans suffer some type of hearing loss.
In addition, 15 of every 1000 people under the age of 18 have a hearing loss, and nearly 90% of people over age 80 have a hearing impairment.
The incidence of hearing loss is greater in men, than women. The sad part is, that hearing loss is the most preventable disability in the world.
Hearing is a complicated process involving both the sensitivity of the ear, as well as the ability to understand, and interpret the speech.
When we hear sounds, we really are interpreting patterns of air molecules in the form of waves. . The ear is able to pick up these waves, and convert them into electrical signals that are sent to the brain. In the brain, these signals are deciphered into meaningful information,...

The Advantages of Programmable Hearing Aids
People need hearing aids for a variety of reasons. Perhaps your hearing is degenerating due to normal aging, or perhaps you have undergone a serious illness that resulted in moderate hearing loss. Whatever the reason, if you have mild to moderate hearing impairment, it is likely that a hearing aid can help to better your quality of life.
Conventional hearing aids are the analog variety and are non-programmable. This means that they have one setting that cannot be changed or altered.
With these models, you may experience sensitivity to background noise without the option to filter. Though many believe that these models are better than no hearing aid at all, with today's advanced technology, other options are available.
Programmable, or digital hearing aids are designed and programmed specifically for each individual. After you have had a hearing examination, your audiologist will determine the level of your hearing loss and what product best suits...
